JustStartHere In Action

On the JustStartHere upcoming races page the races are listed in time order. When a race starts it is automatically replaced at the top of the screen with the next race. The prices captured and displayed are the morning price (choice of 9am/10am/11am) and the 60, 30, 15, 5, 3, 2 & 1 minute prices. The prices from 60 minutes onwards are compared against the morning price. The figures produced show the price movement - these are colour-coded to clearly indicate which horses are steamers and which are drifters (please note: a percentage-based calculation is used as this works better for comparison purposes).

 

The average price movement is calculated at 1 minute before the off along with the 321 price movement figure (shows how the price has changed between 3 minutes and 1 minute before post time - the time when most money is put down and therefore the most important time to monitor price fluctuations). Again, these figures are colour coded according to the size of price and price shift to clearly indicate which horses are steamers and which are drifters.

 

Viewing this information gives you the opportunity to spot back, place and lay selections based on weight of money movement. You can also download all of the data at the end of the day to analyse the results and look to develop your own betting systems based on betting patterns that you've spotted.

 

 

Star Rating System

 

Our star rating system shows who we would back/dutch etc. based on where the money's going. The stars appear on the upcoming races screen once the 1 minute prices are in. Since introducing it July 2011 there have been a number of notable 5 star winners including:

27/8/2011 - Between You And Me in the 17:45 at Down Royal (Betfair SP of 134.85)

29/8/2011 - Backstreet Figher in the 17:40 at Warwick (Betfair SP of 88.16)

Why is price movement important?

 

Under certain conditions, collective opinion is likely to provide more accurate predictions than individual opinion. Ask a large enough group of independent people to predict an event and you'll get a range of responses. Take an average of their estimates and individual errors of judgement at both ends of the spectrum of opinion will cancel themselves out.

Betting exchange markets are a rich source of valuable information for those in the business of prediction as they are a collection of opinions represented by money. The most crucial time to observe price changes is during the last few minutes leading up to a race. That's when the majorityof money is laid down & the one time when you can clearly see what the collective opinion of the race outcome is.

 

What factors affect price movements before the start of each race?

 

Form. Many punters spend hours studying form and if they find a horse who¡¯s odds do not reflect it¡¯s true chances they will bet big to capture the value.  

 

Horse behaviour before the start of the race. Many punters at the race track closely examine the behaviour of the horses before the start of each race. If a horse is playing up in the stalls it's price will invariably drift on the betting exchanges. Sometimes a horse acts strangely due to anxiety or excitement about the race (sweating profusely, rearing up and kicking their hind legs etc.) - this means they are burning up energy needed for the race and are therefore less likely to perform well. 

 

Changes in weather conditions. This can play a massive role in affecting a horse's chances of winning a race. Some horses perform much better on certain surfaces than others. For example, if 'the going' is good it suits a horse that has speed. If the ground is less than good (good to soft, soft and heavy) then a horse with stamina will perform better. 

 

Change of jockey. If a jockey is injured his races are allocated to other jockeys. Often there is a significant difference between the capabilities of the replacement compared to the original. An experienced jockey will be expected to perform better than a jockey who hasn't had as many races or good performances and the odds will lengthen or shorten accordingly.  

 

People in the know. Trainers/owners etc. may be confident that their horse will perform well. If this information gets out (which it invariably does), then punters are likely to act on it.    

 

As you can see there are many factors that can be used to determine the probable winners & losers of a race. Information moves horse racing prices on the betting exchanges - significantly more money being put on a horse to win or lose is often an indication that something has happened to improve/reduce the chances of it winning.
